Welcome from the European Tour

On behalf of everyone at the European Tour, welcome to the 2020 Betfred British Masters hosted by Lee Westwood at Close House.

After back-to-back dual ranking events in Austria, the Betfred British Masters marks the full resumption of our 2020 season following the suspension of competition due to the Coronavirus outbreak. It also launches our innovative six tournaments UK Swing and our Golf for Good initiative, a narrative which will underpin the remainder of our season.

There has been an incredible amount of work going on behind the scenes by so many people to get us to this point, and I would like to thank all of those involved for their tireless dedication over the past four months.

I would like to give a special mention to our Chief Medical Officer, Dr Andrew Murray, who has led this process, establishing our comprehensive Health Strategy based on Government guidelines which has enabled us to restart the season behind closed doors.

These circumstances are clearly very different to when the British Masters was first played at Close House three years ago. On that occasion we enjoyed some terrific support from the North East public, but we are nevertheless delighted to return this week and have Lee as our tournament host once again.

As a Ryder Cup legend and one of our most decorated players, Lee is a first class ambassador for our game, for our Tour and for Close House, where he has been the Touring Professional since 2011.

It is therefore fitting that he becomes the first player to host the British Masters on two occasions and with his support, we look forward to further showcasing Close House to a worldwide audience via our global TV network.

As well as Lee, I would also like to thank Sir Graham Wylie and all of his team at Close House. We are pleased to be supporting the Sir Graham Wylie Foundation as our Official Charity this week as part of our Golf for Good initiative.

Finally, during these unprecedented times we are very grateful to Betfred who have been a terrific partner after coming on board as title sponsor last year. We truly appreciate their ongoing support of the British Masters, alongside the support of all of our other event partners and suppliers.
