Welcome from Lee Westwood

It is a big honour for me to host the Betfred British Masters for a second time and I am looking forward to welcoming my fellow players to Close House this week for the first full European Tour event following the resumption of the 2020 season.

We are obviously faced with very different circumstances to when the tournament was last held here three years ago, as we all continue to adjust to the new normality due to the global pandemic.

The 2017 tournament was a huge success with some terrific support from the north east public and spectators from the surrounding areas. Of course, we would have all loved to have seen those scenes repeated this week but health and safety is everyone’s priority at the moment and I am sure the TV broadcasts will provide fans at home with some top class golf and once again showcase Close House to an international audience.

I have been practising at Close House since it reopened following the lockdown, and the course is in fantastic condition, so I hope everyone in the field this week enjoys playing it. On that note, I would like to personally take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Sir Graham Wylie and all of the team at Close House for their efforts over the past few months and for continuing to make me feel so welcome.

As players we all feel very fortunate simply to be able to compete again in as safe an environment as possible. As a member of the European Tour’s Tournament Committee I am fully aware of the tireless work that has gone on behind the scenes by so many of the Tour’s staff to get us to this point and I would also like to thank them for everything they have done.

Finally, I would also like to thank Betfred and all the other tournament sponsors for their support, without which this tournament could not happen.

I wish you all a great week.
